We recently spent a great 2 weeks in Maleme, which is west of Chania. I’d really like to recommend The Black Lantern taverna on the main road. This taverna really stood out as the best in Maleme, in our opinion.
It’s run by two English guys, who opened it this year. The taverna itself is nicely decorated. There’s an area out the front with comfy seats to enjoy a drink, and a big terrace out the back. We preferred to eat inside, which is big and airy, and they have lots of plants which create a calm atmosphere!
The menu itself is really different to the usual tavernas. Some of the meals we enjoyed included: liver & bacon, Sunday roast, fish & chips, lamb stew, quiche. The portions were huge, it was great value for money, and the chef really knows how to present food well on the plate.
Although it’s nice to try food in the traditional Greek tavernas, it soon gets boring day after day, and The Black Lantern was a refreshing change. We couldn’t work out why it wasn’t packed all the time, but I guess it would be if it was down on the beach front. Well worth a visit if you are staying nearby.
