Topics I've Started

Happy New Year, All

28 December 2012 - 04:52 PM

Happy New Year to all members, old and new.

The forum has been quiet of late after being off line for quite a while earlier, as a couple of people have posted recently, which is a shame. I am as guilty as others - I do visit quite frequently and think must respond to this topic, but then cats need feeding, meals need cooking, shopping to be done...... and the days just slip past.

Anyway a couple of responses I should have made earlier -

Aurelia, I hope your book goes well, it does sound interesting and I will get round to buying a copy.

Santo - hope you do manage to come to Crete next year, and if you do you're on a three-line whip to at least come to stay with us for a couple of days (as long as you don't mind cats).

Retired in Crete - thanks for your recent posts and hope you're having a good winter.

We're now moving into our 3rd year living in Crete and have no regrets. Life isn't perfect - tragedies happen here as well as anywhere else. Three friends have died over the last 18 months, a couple of our well-loved cats have got ill and died, but apart from that life is good. Every day (when the weather is good) we wake up and look at the White Mountains, we can have breakfast outside for 8 months of the year and not needing to work at all only do what we want to do when we want to do it.

Anyway, Happy New Year again and if anybody is in our area (near Kalyves) do contact and we can at least meet up for a drink or meal.

All Booked For 11th March

20 February 2010 - 04:47 PM

As mentioned in another couple of posts, we've booked flights for ourselves and our cats on 11th March. It's been somewhat complex as the pet transport companies can only take responsibility for booking the cats into the hold for the main flight - any ongoing transfers have to be organised by ourselves. Direct flights to Crete don't start until April, and for a number of reasons (hate where we're living now, want to see the start of the building etc...) we didn't want to wait that long, so we will need to get the cats flown into Athens and transport them ourselves on the short hop to Chania. Tickets are all booked but we found out that we will need to transfer the cats from the big crates into small carriers to go into the aircraft cabin - not something we fancied doing in the middle of the airport lounge. Thankfully, we've found a local cattery who will collect them, keep them in pens for a couple of hours and then deliver them back to the airport.

We've rented a house in the village which will be fine for several months - big plus is that it has a big garden and is in a very quiet area, a long way from the main road, so the cats will be safe. It also has 2 bedrooms, so we'll be able to put up friends who want to visit.

We're now down to the last bits of organisation - another round of down-sizing and getting rid of things we don't want to bring over, plus clearing out paperwork and organising money transfers. All very boring stuff, so I won't go into detail. We really can't wait to get over and start our new life - just a bit nervous about the journey and how our cats will survive it.

We've Done It!

08 December 2009 - 06:35 PM

As of this afternoon after a couple of nail-biting weeks while our buyers got their finances sorted out we've finally exchanged contracts this afternoon and will be moving 15th December. We've got a flat to move to for a few months - only one bedroom, so we'll be falling over each other and the cats after being used to a 4 bedrrom house, but it's only temporary. We've also been sent details of a house to rent in the village, whci looks as though it will suit us nicely, so will be coming over in January to look at it and the plan is to move over permanently in early March. So, anybody planning a trip to Kalyves or nearby through next summer - beers and wine will be ready and waiting for you.

It's Crete Here We Come - Early 09!

14 October 2009 - 04:43 PM

Well, things are finally happening! While we were in Crete last week we heard that the house had been sold and our buyers are able to move quickly. Of course nothing is 100% until contracts have been exchanged, but hopefully we'll be out of our house in a couple of months with a large wad of money sitting in our bank account to pay for the build of our house in Neo Chorio. Of course, it won't be finished for several months but our plan is to move out in the New Year, probably February and rent until the house is finished - far better to be there while it's being built. My head is spinning at the moment with everything that needs to be done - pet passports for our cats, find a place to rent in London while we're getting the last bits sorted, clear the house of 12 years of stuff, but I'm sure we'll get there.

So, anybody staying in the Kalyves area anytime next year will be welcome to visit us - hopefully Laid Back Lil we'll finally be able to meet up!

It's Crete Here We Come!

29 April 2009 - 01:23 PM

I posted a while back that I could possibly get early retirement from my company. Well, it's finally come true - I leave work at the end of May with enough money to live on until my pension kicks in.

Also, we saw a plot of land last time we were over that is absolutely ideal for us and got confirmation today from my building society that I can extend the mortgage to cover the purchase so will be sending the deposit over shortly. It's a few kilometres inland from Kalyves in a nice Greek village - we stayed there last time and will be again when we're over in June (from 10th-17th June).

When we move over will depend on selling our house in the UK, but will put it on the market when we get back from holiday. At least I'll have the time to clear the house of all the accumulated clutter over the years and make it look good.

Feeling very excited now!
