Hi, we have just returned from Crete. Our party consisted of ages ranging from almost 50 down to 10.
We stayed in Koutouloufari which we found ideal.
It is a smallish village just outside of Hersonissos, which is a livelier resort.
There were lots of small shops and an abundance of lovely restaurants and tavernas.
There was a beach about 800m away however the better beach was stallis which was a very short bus ride away (costing 1 euro). Stallis was lovely however we found it a little commercialised. Koutouloufari has kept its wonderful Greek charm whilst still having all the amenities that you need.
There are plenty of good trips from visiting historical sites to spending a day on a boat.
Heraklion is good for shopping and there is a market there on a Saturday.
Again this was an easy bus ride away(costing 2.2 euros).
Wherever you go I am sure you will love Crete.
