Mosquitoes ?

10 May 2005 - 12:59 PM

Here in Eastern Canada we are awaiting the onslaught of "bug season". A couple of sunny warm days & the black flies and then mosquitoes will be upon us. It's not a big deal in the urban areas or along the breezy coastline but inland and around damp areas the little buggars can be quite vicious.

What can I expect in Crete (& Naxos) when we arrive at the end of the month? ( wow....only 17 more days !!!)

Hotel in Heraklion

21 April 2005 - 08:40 PM

Could someone recommend a hotel in "downtown" Heraklion?
We need a reasonably priced (50 Euros or less) place for just 1 night relatively close to the port as we have to catch a 9:15 am ferry.
I checked
but the places listed are outside Heraklion.
Am I being "too cheap" looking for a place for 50 Euros or less?

Bus or Taxi from Matala to Heraklion ?

12 April 2005 - 02:02 PM

After spending a week or so in Matala we want to take a ferry to Naxos. The ferry leaves Heraklion at 9:15 am daily. It appears from the bus schedule that the first bus leaves Matala at 7:00 am.
Will we get to Heraklion in time for the 9:15 ferry? I have no idea how long the trip will take. Also, I think the bus station that we will get dropped off at in Heraklion is "B", which means we have to walk or grab a taxi to get to the ferry.
Is this possible or do we need to take a taxi from Matala to Heraklion?

Regarding a taxi from Matala to Heraklion; Explorecrete.com lists the 2004 taxi fare as 42 (this is to the airport). Is this price per person or for the 2 of us?

The other option, of course, is to travel by bus and stay a night in Heraklion to get the morning ferry the next day.

We have pretty much decided that we are going to stay in Matala for a week at the end of May first of June.
I "think" we have narrowed the hotels down to these 2 places :

Matala Valley Village -

Dimitris Villa Hotel -

We wanted a smaller hotel, no big resort, a pool, relatively close to the beach and a reasonable price.

This two places seem to fit the bill. Does anyone have any experience with either place? We are also open to other suggestions but we should soon decide.

So tell me....How do real men (or women  ) drink ouzo ?

We are heading to Crete in exactly 3 months and I thought to celebrate the occasion I would buy a bottle of ouzo to share with a few friends tonight.

I hate to admit this but, to be perfectly honest, I was not all that fussy about the taste. It was "kinda" like zambuca but had a stronger more bitter taste. We were drinking it straight, as a shot.

So what is my next step ? ......

1) drink it with ice, water & lemon as suggested on the bottle 8)
2) keep on sipping it straight & acquire a taste
3) cancel the trip :(
