Thanks Henry, I'd recommend southern Lassithi to anyone who wants to get away from it all. The local hotel facilities may be 21st century but the further you walk from the hotel grounds the further back in time you seem to travel.

If you are interested in wildlife the latest Crete Nature blog features the wetlands at Almyros (Gazi-Heraklion) which is accessible by bus and well worth a visit. Take the Heraklion bus and get off at Gazi then either find a bus going to Ammoudara or take a taxi (it's only a few km) from gazi.
