Topics I've Started

Hi Again, From Mike And Jane

06 September 2013 - 08:08 AM

We've not posted for some time for various reasons, but I've decided to stir myself and put some effort  in.

First Easy Jet have opened bookings for next year, we've already booked ourselves to Chania on 20/05/'14, and returning 05/06/'14.

this does give us an extra day at the expense of a latenight/ early morning return, but as we're both retired now we don't have to get back to work (oh yes, I remember work).

We've been staying at the same place in Ag.Apostoli for 4 years now, beause the area suits us and the transport links are good.

We don't go exploring as much, as I don't enjoy driving in Crete like I used to, and we don't feel inclned to spend the money on car hire.

We do use the buses a lot, they are good value for money, just a bit limiting on times and destinations once you're off the beaten track.

Last year, having heard that the archeological museum in Heraklion was effectively re-opened, we took the bus all the way to Heraklion from Chania, only to find that he museum closed shortly after we got there. This disapointment was compounded by the heavy rain which fell for the rest of the day and limited our interest in siteseeing.

So we got back on the bus and went back again. That was only the second time we've been to the city in twenty years of coming to Crete, we will need a lot of encouragement to make the effort again. Perhaps some of you have had some wonderful times there and can tell us about it.

The fact that we have been returning to Crete for twenty years shows the affection we have for the place.

Hope we have a great time next year to keep it alive.

Crete Sept 2011

16 February 2011 - 11:30 PM

We are all booked for our annual visit and this year will be returning to the Akti in Aghoi Apostoli nr Kalamak outside Chania, as it's such grand location right next to the Bus stop for the Chania bus so we have little need for car hire. We should be able to get most places and visit people by bus. We are booked to arrive 13.09.11 and depart 27.09.11. We are always up for meeting up with anyone for a drink or two.
Just to make life more interesting this year our daughter is planning to attend an academic conference in crete while we are there. unfortunately the location for this conference seems to vary weekly. It was originally to be in Rethymnon, but later was scheduled for Heraklion, and was last reported as far east as Hersonissos. She wants to combine the trip with a break so intends to find some accomodation for her husband and herself for around the conference. Obviously we will confirm dates and location a.s.a.p. but meanwhile folks you can while away winter evenings pondering possible interesting places for them to stay.
Meanwhile hope everyone has a good summer.

Our Flights Are Booked

03 June 2009 - 06:49 AM

Hello All - Hooray - our flights to Crete are booked, we are flying into HER on 19th Sept, spending a few days in the East before heading West for a week in Kalives. Our daughters are flying in on the "Red Eye" on 23rd Arriving at 22.30. Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced hotel near HER airport so they can eat and sleep overnight before heading West to join us in Kalives on the Thursday morning. Also has anyone got any suggestions for car hire.

Many thanks

Mike and Jane
