Wim - the peony I grow are Paeonia lactiflora and Paeonia officinalis. I understand that on Crete you have two native varieties Paeonia parnassica and Paeonia clusii - both protected by the Bern Convention of 1979. Despite the protection I am aware that the two native varieties are declining because of development of coastal areas and because of plant collectors.
The information in Wikipedia is fairly generalised and the information in Nature is three years old. There is always a chance on websites such as these that there is a botanist or keen gardener who is a member and will provide specific information.

Laid Back Lil - no, I do not need information on weather conditions in Crete.

I had thought this forum was about Crete in general and not exclusively about people wanting to live or retire to Crete - perhaps I was wrong.

Dear me Wim, why a wind-up?
In the English lake district there used to be a hermit often refered to as the Borrowdale Hermit. He found some people's pronouncements difficult to accept so he carved over the entrance to his cave "Don't waste words, jump to conclusions"
I wonder if I would have had the same type of response if I said I was vegetarian or perhaps had an intollerance to olive oil?

As an incentive to learn Greek you may be interested in the following:-

For those of you who watch what you eat, here's the final word on nutrition and health. It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting nutritional studies.
1. The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British.
2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British.
3. The Chinese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British.
4. The Italians drink a lot of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British.
5. The Germans drink a lot of beer and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British.
CONCLUSION: Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you.
