Ghost Village

02 June 2008 - 05:06 PM

Hi I'm Paul and have a house in Males. My wife and I have just returned to UK after spending 2 months at the house. Whenever we come to Crete we try to see places not visited before. This time we found a deserted village along the coast from Mirtos called 'Kalami'. Can anyone tell me why it is deserted (just like the Marie Celeste!). Also on this trip we walked the Samaria Gorge, never again . Not having walked more than 4 miles at any one time for over 25years we suffered for days after. Still being both in our 60's we feel a little proud that we did it. We have made friends with Susana and Adrian, the people who run the donkey sanctuary in Anatoli, they have no financial help from anyone so if you are passing that way!. Paul

We will shortly be visiting our house in Males for the summer. As we intend to retire here in the next two years we feel language lessons would help us integrate even more than we have. Does anyone know of a teacher in or around Ierapetra who would be prepared to take on two 'old Brits'. Paul

Plastic Countryside

29 June 2007 - 06:47 PM

I have just returned from a most enjoyable 6 weeks on Crete. My wife and I spent some time touring then she had to return to UK. So most of the time was spent on doing maintance to the house. My concern is the sea of plastic that covers the land from Ierapetra almost to Myrtos. Looking down on the coast from the road above (Anatoli to Males), it looks terrible, and friends tell me the chemicals being used is poisoning the land. I have raised this point before but this plastic sea seems out of control, cant something be done in the way of legislation :P . Red

:P My name is Paul AKA 'Red', I am a retired photojournalist specialising in environmental subjects. For years I have been P****d off with UK policies relating to Health, crime and imigration so decided to move (at least part of the year) to this country I love, Crete. I purchased a pile of stones in the village of Males in  2003. My friend, the late Tony Fennymore, persuaded me to by the house. It was completed 2 years ago and has been my home for part of the year since then. I am 64 and live with my partner Maureen. Tomorrow 16th. I arrive on Crete for a 2 month stay.
