In 3 weeks time myself and family will be coming to hersonissos for a fortnight. We can't turn on the news at the moment without reading about the troubles in Greece.

The only warning from the UK government is to ensure that you have enough cash. We will be self catering so will need to ensure we have sufficient funds.

Has anyone noticed any difference or are all restaurants/bars etc open as usual? Is this expected to continue as normal?

Hi, although I'm in the UK at present I am keeping in touch with friends in Crete and the overwhelming view is keep calm and weather the media storm. Locally shops and businesses are open and eager to accept your euros. Crete is a cash based society anyway so just make sure you take holiday funds with you.

The sun will shine and the water is warm, as is the welcome! Enjoy your holiday and let us know how you get on. X

Once your there you'll wonder why you  got concerned. The weather will be welcoming, your hosts  will be even more welcoming, and your euros especially welcome.

Ive always taken cash, splitting it in half between us and once at our destination only carried our daily allowance which was 60 euros. Leaving the balance somewhere safe where  your staying..

So  relax,  enjoy, and i wish it was me going :)

Although those with Greek bank accounts are limited to 60 Euros per day this DOES NOT APPLY to those with foreign (non Greek) accounts. The cash ATM's in Agios Nikolaos are all working and I assume that those in other towns/villages in Crete are the same. From local press reports it would seem that the problems are mainly confined to Athens.

To be honest the weather is a bit funny this year. There were a few of those big white fluffy things in the sky today, almost unheard of at the end of June! (Although the temp was 34C)

In my opinion, tourists have nothing to fear.

John

Cornwall - Great at any time of the year.

Thanks guys - very reassuring. As long as all the bars and restaurants are open and ready to take my money I'll be happy.
