Dear friends,
thank you all for your kind wishes for my birthday. I was in Sougia from Friday afternoon until Sunday. I enjoyed the sea, I explored the area and I discovered new beautiful spots, that I had not visited in the past. One of my "discoveries" was the village of Koustogerako, which is hidden high above Sougia in the White Mountains. The photo below is from the E4 path that goes from Sougia to Koustogerako and it continues to the Omalos plateau. The altitude must be about 600-800 metres and there is a very beautiful forest with pine and cypress trees up there.
Koustogerako and Livadas (another village in the area) had an important role in the resistance against the German army during WW2 and many of their residents were executed.
The weather was great and Sougia is still beautiful and sirene. There are a few new hotels, but the people of Sougia complain that the number of tourists is very low this year. During the weekend most visitors were locals from Chania and the absence of tourists was visible in the tavernas and the bars.
