Hi everyone,
My names Tom and am a associate member of the Crete Veterans Association. My Regiment The Royal Anglian Regiment fought in the battle of Crete in 1941. Then known as the Leicesters. They were at Heraklion. I've been to Crete a few times, what a fantastic island.
In May 1999 myself and a friend walked (and run) from Kalives to Sfakia covering the same route the troops made on the withdrawal across the island. (We manged to raise 2k for Great Ormond Street Childrens hospital). Culminating with the laying of two wreaths at the memorial in Sfakia.
We met allot of vets and we talked (and drank) for hours at the hotel in Maleme. It was good to hear the stories told from both the troops on the ground and from sailors involved in taking the troops and airmen off the island. I actaually put together a book/pamphlet of the battle of Crete. I still have a few if anyone wants one. The Battalion I served in for 18yrs is the 1st Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment. There now serving in Afghanistan.
Great to be here
