Please can someone help. My son-in-law's mum had massive heart attack on monday and is in Universtiy hospital in Heraklion. We are getting no info from drs there and my son-in-law is looking to fly there on Tuesday to be with his mum, (family there now). We need to find very very cheap accommodation as close to the hospital as possible. At the moment nobody is allowed to see her, they are being made to wait upstairs in the hospital. Anyone know why this is ?? Any help someone can give us will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in anticipation.

Donna apologies, I can't help with accommodation as I don't know Heraklion that well, but just wanted to say how sorry I am at your news and can appreciate how worrying a time this must be for your family.

I'm sure somebody else will be able to help with suggestions for accommodation.

Donna,I think within the hospital there is accommodation at avery good rate for the relatives. One needs to ask for a room at the help desk inside the hospital. When the patients are in the emergency room no one is allowed to visit except certain hours when the hospital makes an announcment thru the speakers for those who are located at the waiting room. I lost my mother last Oct. to a heart attack and I have been through this painful process. I hope for the best.

Thanks very much for that. My son-in-law has to go to Wales tomorrow to get his passport, then we are trying to get him flight for Friday. The holiday company have said they can provide a room for 1 member of the family, but there are 3 of his sisters there at the moment, due back
Tuesday. So maybe him getting room in hospital would be better. It's an hour to the hospital from the resort.
Thanks again for the replies.

Hope you get things sorted Donna, maybe one of the sisters could talk again to the rep as there are ALL immediate family and press that the company should do something.
Good Luck

I suggest he stays in Hotel Evans (no relation).......Its a very reasonable and quiet business type hotel and located quite centrally.....any taxi driver will take him there....It can't be more than a few euros fare from the hospital.

When my, now departed, wife was admitted to Iraklion Hospital I managed to secure a room within 2 mins walking distance of the hospital.

It is on the campus of the hospital, you need to ask the administration officer for accomodation at the hospital.

The cost was negligable, maybe €15 per night, but there was always contact via the night porter to the hospital nurses.

Hope this helps in some way.

Thanks everyone, the hospital accomodation looks like the best bet from the sounds of it. The main problem at the moment is lack of understanding between doctors and family as no-one speaks greek from the family's side and i don't think anyone has come across an English speaking doctor. We know now that her insurance will cover everything so that is a relief.
Thanks so much for all your advice and help we are really grateful.

Language should not be a problem. Most of Greek doctors are fluent in English.

Ok, rep over there has found my son-in-law and his brother a room for 20 euros a night, so that's a start.
The mum has opened her eyes but that's all we know for now.
Thanks again all of you for your help and kind words.

Thanks Pam.
Chris was taken off life support on Friday but had to have a Tracheoctomy (spelling) as she couldn't breathe. She has made improvemnets over the week-end. There was talk of her coming home yesterday!!! Air ambulance was mentioned, but then my daughter said the Dr's didn't know what an air ambulance was.!!! I know the Sky Express is in Hereklion as i found it on the net and that is converted to an ambulance. The rep had no news/updates at all yesterday so we are all in the dark as to what is happening. I personally feel it's too early for her to be flying back just yet, but i'm no doctor so will ahve to wait and see if we get any info today.
Thanks again everyone.

Hello there

My mum also had a heart attack in Rethymnon on Sunday and is due to be transferred to one of the Heraklion hospitals tomorrow. Thankfully I don't think she is as seriously affected as your relative.

My heart goes out to you, the past 4 days have been the worst of my life. We too are experiencing difficulties with translating doctors reports so its been an emotional roller coaster of good news followed by bad.

I hope she makes good progress and I'll tell my dad to keep an eye out, I know sometimes it helps just to see oneone that speaks the same language as you.

I am so sorry to hear about your mum Pops. I do hope she makes a speedy recovery. Chris is in University Hospital of Hereklion.
They have decided not to bring her back just yet, looking more at next week. She has ITU Psychosis. they are hoping to put her in a main ward today, she still has the Trachy in for her breathing. Most of the family are back now, just leaving 2 daughters there.

Thanks for your message, mum is on her way to the University hospital as we speak so just got to wait for a few hours now till she gets there and we can establish contact again. I hope Chris will continue to improve. Did you manage to find a hotel for your son in law, my dad is going to need somewhere to stay tonight if he cant stay at the hospital.

Chris is now on the ward, The tour rep had rooms spare for my son-in-law, but has his 2 sisters are out there and money was so tight he didn't fly out. Maybe your mum and Chris will get talking.
There was a hotel nearby but i can't remember the name of it, i'm sorry.
With any luck your dad should get a room at the hospital, i think the girls have just been sleeping on the chairs outside the ITU room.
Best Wishes to your mum.

I wish the family concerned with these dramatic events, like "pops" and "a27inheaven" a lot of strength and a safe and healthy homecoming for the patients.

The questions that remain for me are, eg. : What was the age of the patients and how come they had these severe heart attacks while having a holiday on such a relaxed island like Crete. Were they suffering from any heart diseases, etc?

Don't get me wrong but, considering that this Forum was used as a sort of intermediate, it made a lot of members curious and interested to read more....

Wishing you all a lot of strength
