I recently booked my holiday for this year, 9th July. I thought I'd try somewhere else, a different island as I've only ever been to Crete. So I booked to go to Zante. Although I've spoken to a lot of people and they say Zante is wonderful, I decided to have a look on this website just to remind myself how much I love Crete! Now I've done that, im thinking I've made a mistake! I want to go to Crete again!! I really feel like I'll be missing out by not going there!! What if I hate Zante? But then I imagine all the Greek islands have there own kind of charm. Its not like I can jump on a boat and sail from Zante to Crete either! Its too far!! ARrrrrgh!

Its always a difficult one. Every year I think 'The World's a big place, I must go somewhere else'. But the draw to Crete is always so strong. I've been to Zante, it was okay, I'm sure you'll have a fine time. Personally I prefer Crete, but its good to try other Islands too. Helps you to see Crete is the best one :D

[size=3][b][color=#FF99FF] :D I tell you whats worrying me the most....The fact that I read the other day that Zante keeps having mini Earthquakes! The last 1 was last October! That was quite a large 1 too (5.7) and tourists were paying extra money for flights to come home! Oh well, I can always try to get out to Crete later on in the year if the bank allows!!

I have been to both Zante (once) and Crete (September will be my 4th visit).

Zante (I stayed in Tsilivi) is ok, as Caroline mentioned; but Crete certainly has the edge.

I'm sure you'll still have a great holiday!

On another note, if you look at Google Earth, with the earthquake features switched on, you'll notice that both Crete and Zante have about the same amount of earthquake activity.

I know how you feel tamar, i went to crete for 11 yrs between 1990 & 2001, went back this year with my Partner and i've now got the worst post holiday blues ever. :D

Re the earthquakes, if you get enough raki in they are not going to bother you much, in fact you may walk straighter !!!!

You will enjoy Zante, I've never been but have spoke to many that have and the reports are ok.

We've been to quite a few places around Greece (including Corfu a couple of times - yes, Corfu is very nice if you avoid the hotspots!, but we haven't been to Zante). Choosing where to go is a bit like selecting from an extensive menu - even if your preferred option is vegetarian carrot roast (which is not my favourite) then you would be cheating yourself if you didn't try something else.

Over the years our Crete to the Rest of Greece ratio is probably about 5 to 2 - we just keep coming back - nay, home - to Crete.

Believe it or not, but there are people in this world who have favourite places in Greece other than Crete. Fortunately we are all different, and just imagine if they all came to our chosen spot - then we would have to do what leopards allegedly are incapable of, and change our spots.

Go for it, and have a great time! See you in Crete another day.

Henry.

[font=Comic Sans Ms][size=3] :D Thank you all for your replys! You've all made me feel a bit better! I will be staying in the resort Tsilivi, Im most looking forward to traveling around the Island and seeing the famous shipwreck! and maybe some turtles! As Zante is much smaller than Crete I shouldn't find this too difficult!
I will post comments of Zante when I get back!! We shall see how it compares!! But hopefully I will be able to get out to Crete in September!! So I wont get too many withdrawal symptoms!

Having done both the turtle trail and the visit to the shipwreck on Zante, I'd not bother with the shipwreck visit again. It's only a rusty, old oil tanker and the journey there was truly vomit inducing. (It was for me, anyway!). It's lovely to be able to see the turtles though. I have a lovely photograph somewhere of a turtle in the sea, I know it's a turtle, but to everyone else it just looks like a dark patch of sea!

I've also been to Zante twice and to Corfu once, and last year I went Stalis Crete and I must admit Crete was the best of the Greek islands that I have been to.
While on holiday to Zante I did experience the tremors, but the locals didn't seem to bother very much about them, so neither did I.
You could look on the bright side? it's always something else to write about on the postcards.
I really don't think you will be disappointed with Zante as both times that I went there on holiday , I had a fantastic time, and as tinks say's, I wouldn't bother with the shipwreck tour, all i could say about it is that it's worth seeing, but not worth paying to see.

Enjoy your holiday..... :D

I think this is a problem that many of us have!
I often find, the first few days in Crete,I sometimes think"we really should try somewhere else",then, that overwhelming feeling kicks in again, like hearing a voice whisperingin your head,"you are in the place where your heart is--how could anywhere be better than that?"
Its often said that Crete is a magical place.
Us poor souls who have fallen under its spell, can perhaps never be free of it.It is buried so deep in your heart, you can never truly leave!
But then,--with its beauty, its food, its culture, its music and above all the people,-----why try!

I have been to a number of Greek islands and they all have something special about them - the only one I didn't really like was Rhodes. Out other favourite place in Greece is Paxos - a small Ionian island which we used to return to every year for about 14 years. It is a lovely place for walking in the shade of the olive groves and so small that you can walk from one end to the other in a day (not that we have ever done that). We had considered retiring there as we have a number of friends on the island, but have decided that it is really too small for living there all year round, so are looking at Crete now, but will hopefully still return there for holidays. Going to Paxos again in September - a gap of 2 years due to having to cancel last year (broke my arm 2 days before!), so it'll be interesting to see how it's changed.

Anyway, enjoy Zante - I've only been there on sailing holiday but it looks a lovely island.
