#14762 Chania Saturday Market

Posted by Mike &Jane on 17 September 2008 - 07:31 PM in Explore Crete

We had heard that the farmer's market on Saturday mornings had been moved "temporarily" from Odos Minoos, next to the city wall, near the football stadium, while "improvements" were made. I believe it was near the courthouse at one point. Does anyone know where it will be while we are in Kalives (Oct 4th).
I would hate to miss it for the first time since 1996.

Hi to Laid Back Lil & Pam. Sorry, we won't get to meet again Lil. I can't find Pam's posting but I seem to recall you and Bob will be in Kalives at some time. We have booked Dad into the Akti Galini, while the rest of us are staying at Zourpas. Will explain if/when we see you. Will keep a look out for you in the Potamos in the evenings. We are arriving 30th Sept and leaving on 7th October. Looking forward to showing off our fave places to the rest of the family, but cautious of trying to do too much. It is a holiday after all!
Only 5 weeks to go. Hurrah

#14295 Samaria Gorge

Posted by Mike &Jane on 04 June 2008 - 08:27 AM in Explore Crete

Hello to all forum members, Five of us (Us, My Dad and our Daughter and Boyfriend) are coming to Kalives on 30th September for a week. Some of our party may choose to walk the gorge, while we oldies meet them in Agia Roumelli, however this is the question. The last time Mike walked the gorge was in Sept 2006 and there was a big problem with wasps. The same problem existed in Hora Sfakia and Argouropolis. Were we just unlucky or is this normal for this time of year? My daughter is almost phobic about wasps, so if it is a potential problem it would be better not to attempt it.

I hope those who regularly walk the gorge and surrounds will be able to give us some information.

Looking forward to seeing any other forum members in the Kalives area during the first week of October.

Many thanks, Mike & Jane

You may find the following website of interest, reads almost like some resort brochures, I bet lots of military are quite keen to go and let off some "wizz-bangs". Although we have been going to Chania area since 1993, we have never seen anything being launched. I think they spend most of the time at the officer's club at Marathi.
Sorry I forgot to mention:-
1)- Although there are the usual "NO PHOTOGRAPHY" signs all over the area, the site is very clear on Google Earth (at extreme eastern edge of Akrotiri peninsular), and there are nice photos on the website:-

(I tried using the "Insert Link" button but couldn't make it work, even after consulting "Help"

#13781 Car Hire, Heraklion To Makrigialos

Posted by Mike &Jane on 09 April 2008 - 07:33 AM in Explore Crete

Thanks for response Emma, we have lots of experiences (mostly good) with car hire around the Chania area, but the last time we were in Makrigialos was 2002 when we used two different firms with quite different experinces.
On this occasion they are going to need total dependability as they will be relying on the car to meet their flights, which is why I thought some personal recommendations might be useful.

#12818 Good Resort For Historic Sights?

Posted by Mike &Jane on 12 January 2008 - 10:12 AM in Explore Crete

Hi - if you don't drive and you want nightlife (but not noisy) sites, a good choice of Tavernas et, etc you would be best based in Chania. We spent a week at the Lucia Hotel, right on the waterfront at very reasonable rates. Although it was on the harbour it was not noisy (in September) and has the best view in Chania. If you tire of what Chania has to offer you can get a bus from the bus station to almost anywhere on the island, for example Elifonisi, Paleochora, Rethymnon. There are also many boat trips from Chania. The travel to crete website, as well as this one, has many hotels and apartments to choose from.

We hope you have a wonderful time in Crete, do report back with your impressions, won't you.

#12460 Your Plans For Next Year?

Posted by Mike &Jane on 12 December 2007 - 09:27 AM in Meet in Crete

In answer to the question "don't you get bored visiting the same place every year" One of the joys of returning to the same place is that you make friends, you see a place develop and change, sometimes for the better sometimes not. Crete is unique in that it is such a large and diverse Island there is always something new to discover. When you are young it is right to learn as much as you can and try different places, but as you get older you appreciate the less dramatic but nevertheless interesting discoveries.

Having said all that we are booked to visit the Peleponnese next summer (just for a change) it will be our first time on mainland Greece. I have no doubt that we will return to Crete if not next autumn, then in 2009.

#12334 Little Cove In Kokkino Chorio

Posted by Mike &Jane on 03 December 2007 - 09:19 AM in Explore Crete

Hi Pam - I am sorry I can't reproduce the Walks Booklet as it is copyright, but next time you are in Kalives go to the Papyrus Bookshop (just up from the Laundry towards the National Road) where Bob and Anns books are on sale. Even if you don't do the walks you will be contributing to the Charity RNIB which benefits from sales of the booklets.

To Wim - can we claim the bottle of Raki now!

Best wishes

Hi Laid back Lil, Wim & Pam

If you can get hold of Bob and Annas walks book 1, walk 2 describes the walk to the caves. I think this is where you are.

If you don't have it PM me and I will copy it out for you. I am sure you will have heard of Bob and Ann as they organise walks around Kalives & Almirida throughout the summer. Wonderful people.

Best Wishes and Good Luck

Mike & Jane
