#16717 Of Crete And The British Here . . .

Posted by Laid Back Lil on 05 December 2010 - 05:45 PM in Living in Crete

I've got to admit I partly agree - I personally haven't had the time to learn Greek in the three years we' ve had a house - but I AM TRYING!!! I'm not in Crete full time and work back in Blightey etc. I have bought many phrase books and cds and downloaded them on the phone and it's taken me nearly a year just to be able to order food, drink, say my name, ask another's name etc - very hard language to learn. A lot of the locals really appreciate my efforts at speaking Greek (now on Volume 2 of the CD - another year learning probably),. ~We have a local minimarket and five old Greek ladies sit out on broken chairs outside (typically post card picture)... only one of them speaks broken English, and we always always take the time to sit and speak with them and learn a few words at each chat with them. They love us and we love them. I for one don't want MacDonalds, Fish & Chips, Burgers etc - I detest it when my meal is served with chips!!! I always ask for potatoes preferably cooked lemon and olive oil. I bought in Crete because I love the culture, I love the food and I love the laid-back attitude to life and I love the ugly looking oranges that taste so sweet rather than the rubbish i buy in the supermarkets here. I love the fact that most of the tavernas grow their own veg and have their own meat - that's what its all about for me. I might crave a curry sometimes - but I wouldn't want an Indian restaurant on my doorstep - I'll make a curry if I want want And so, all the English aren't the same - there are some of us out there that embrace the whole thing.

#16640 Fish That Nip

Posted by Laid Back Lil on 01 September 2010 - 02:39 PM in Explore Crete

Hi Pam
No currently at home, back out shortly with mum and dad (who haven't been before) and in their 80s! I snorkel at the cove and haven't been bitten but in Almyrida bay I was nipped (enough to make you go Aghh) a couple of times and so were children and others being nipped too. Have never ever experienced this before. Will make a note of you number and will get in touch as soon as we're in the area

#16637 Fish That Nip

Hi Guys - Have been out to Almyrida a couple of times this year and have noticed that we're being bitten (quite a nasty nip!) by fish in the sea. We can't work out what fish are biting as there's lots of different ones. This happens in shallow water - about a metre to 1.5 metres. My neighbour was in Kalives and a fish bit him in the sea and left two barbs in his leg. Seemed at first to be around mozzie bites but then just anywhere on the legs. Can someone tell me what these fish are please and why this year they seem to be biting? Doesn't make for very pleasant swimming especially for the youngsters. :)

#16108 Easyjet Flights To Chania

Posted by Laid Back Lil on 25 January 2010 - 10:16 AM in Explore Crete

Hi Jane and Mike. Yes extremely good prices aren't they! Doesn't benefit me this year much (although did change one of our bookings to add an extra day etc), but next year will be so much better. It will even give us the opportunity to fly into Heraklion (which we don't mind doing as we sometimes stop for lunch at Bali on the way), then we'll be able to fly back via Chania to save a bit of time. Now they've got their foot in the door at last! No publicity on their latest news pages though, just sneaked it on the destinations page - good job my friends out there gave me the tip off when they saw it in the newspaper out there.
