Where are you 'hearing' this and what do you mean by a pub. In Rethymno we dont really have pubs (unless you count the Irish pub) there are mostly cafes and clubs and as far as I know what I said above is the average price for a beer/drink in a cafe.
In tavernas, you can pay as low as 1.50 for a big beer because these places serve food. Some tavernas will have special menus for two people - Greek Salad, 2 Main dishes and house wine for as little as 15 euro.

Aaron - I dont know what website has those remarks but Rethymno has a lovely Old Town with restaurants, bars, cafes, meze shops(restaurants serving lots of small dishes) and shops with traditional produce. Personally I find it very Greek.

We will be now having it in Pigi and here are the new directions. If you are coming from Heraklion direction, take the first turn off for the Old National Road and come along as far as the 'Go Kart' track on the left. Turn left at this road and drive for 2.2kilometres and you will see a Nestle flag and balloons on the right hand side of the road and that is where it is. For the people coming from Chania direction, come along the old National Road through Platanes and Adele until you come to the Go Kart track on the right and turn right and see above.
Hope anybody that is interested can pass this info on.
Again, thank you.

We are having a car boot sale on Sunday 27th November in Platanes, Rethymno, this will start at around 12 midday. Entry will be 10euros per car as this is for a good cause. Go to the kiosk in the centre of Platanes village and opposite the Galaxy Car Rental behind the kiosk there is a road down to the beach, the sale will be held in the car park at the end of this road. EVERYBODY welcome.
Just to explain a little. At end of every season my friends and I always clear out our summer/winter clothes, books and other stuff and take them to our chum Christine in Pigi. Christine has a second hand shop and she sells everything from furniture and ornaments to books and clothes. Normally when anything is sold, Christine takes a small percent and the rest of the money goes to whoever owned it. When we bring our goodies to Christine we always let her keep whatever she makes from it for her animals, because, Christine will never turn a stray animal away from her door. She takes in dogs, cats, ducks, goats...you name it, if it is stray, it will always find a home in Pigi. So, because this very caring lady doesnt receive any funding from any of the registered local animal shelters we decided that instead of leaving our stuff in the second hand shop we could have a boot sale instead and donate the money to the animals.
So please come, it should be a good day out if nothing else and you never know, you might pick up the bargain of your dreams.
If anybody needs any further information please feel free to ring me or text me on my mobile 6944 195181 or email me at annestel2001 'at' yahoo.com (replace the at with the @).
Hope to see you soon.

Congratulations on your upcoming nuptials.
If I was coming to Crete for my honeymoon I would choose somewhere in the south of the island, because while the north is lovely, the south is not as comercialised as the north. It just strikes me as more romantic.

A friend of mine and myself were lucky enough to hitch a ride in a fishing boat back to Castelli from a fisherman who had been having his lunch in the little taverna right on the beach.
The strange thing is that I found a photograph on Explore Crete and it is nearly exactly the same as a photo that I took on that day.

A bit off topic but, a few years ago we went to see Pyx Lax playing and I spotted Mihalis Tzouganakis on his way back stage to meet some of the members of the band. He ended up singing "Pali Pali" on stage with them and the crowd went ballistic! Ahhh... happy times!!!

Meet in Crete
I have lived in Rethymno with my Greek partner for 11 years and I have been working in bars with many Greek "camakis". I have seen the way some of these lads operate and a lot of times I didnt find it amusing.
If your boyfriends are genuine, find out from them if now that the season has finished it would be OK for you to visit them. If they agree, try to come over for a week, BUT, make sure that you have accomodation, enough money to keep you for the week and your airfare home. I dont know the two men in question and they probably are nice people. If they have wives/girlfriends and are just leading you on it would be harder for them to have you here now that the season has finished and there are no tourists about. If they agree to you coming over then you will know that they are serious and they want to see you, if not.....at least you will know your situation a bit more clearly and be able to get on with your life.
BE WARNED though, coming to Crete in the winter on your own (if things dont work out) is not the same as the summer when there are a lot of other tourists around, but you never know you could have a nice time with your new boyfriend.
I hope you find this helpful because I know that this holiday romance thing can be very difficult. Let us know what happens.

You will find that most of the beaches in the towns have volleyball nets. The one on the beach road in Rethymno opposite the Porto Rethymno hotel always has games going on. I dont think you will have much problem arranging some friendly matches with the local lads and lassies or holidaymakers.

Cretan and Greek Music
One of my favourite Cretan singers, Mihalis Zougianakis (apologies if the spelling is wrong) sings this song and your post reminded me of a night in the summer just past when we went to see him singing in the theatre at the Fortezza in Rethymno.
It was such a magical night, just a slight hint of a breeze coming off the sea and looking up at the clear night sky with Mihalis and his musicians entertaining us with all our favourites. I didnt want it to end.
