Cretan and Greek Music
A close friend of mine who IS Cretan,Vasilis who runs "Posto" cafe/bar at Bali, spends many hours study on various aspects of Greek/Cretan history, and is very well read.
He revealed to me last year, after a great deal of research into old Cretan dialect,he had come to a conclusion he was afraid to tell the locals about.
He is convinced that much of the old dialect can be traced back to Arabic do to the fact that long ago,Crete was invaded by an Arabic war lord, who was so taken with the place,he destoyed his own ships, and ordered his army to take Cretan women as wives which gave rise to much of the Arab influences.
Interesting theory.True or not,Ive allways felt Crete has a feel of many cultures about it.
If you ever visit Bali, please look up Vasilis,a entertaining and very interesting guy!Steve.B

Yes there are lots of places within easy reach by car,Ag.Nik,Elounda,Lasithi plateau, the Dicti cave,Irapetra, hersonisos(good for shops)
An interesting experience if you can make a Saturday morning,is the open air Bazzare and market in Heraklion, and of cours Knossos and the museums.
Kritsa is not too far away,if you go there recopmend go out other side of village, and drive up to top,Katharo Plateau(tavernas at top)
Also close by,are Sissi and Milatos.heading west past Heraklion,Bali and Rethymnon are less than 2 hours drive and worth a visit. The thing is,explore, and enjoy this wonderful island and its people.

Nice idea!
However,a lot to consider.
How technicaly informed are you about your subject? There is always a chance of a customer being much more than a keen amature!
However, judging from some of your pics, you are obviously pretty competant, but to make this work, you need to be able to find ways to take your clients photography to a higher level with results they can see for themselves.
Also, after looking at other ventures, like for instance painting courses, and Greek cookery courses, cost can be a prohibitive factor for many.
There is the cost of the air-fare,accomodation,transport ,before you even think about your own cost or making a profit!
However,Im sure you are aware of much of this, and should you get it going,I wish you every success.
Would I be right in thinking your main area of Crete is in the west?
Though we have travelled end to end,my main area is decidedly the East of the island,so if you need any help or advice about the east,Im more than happy to help where I can.
Anyway, hope this has been of some help,if only in semi-critical way!
Best of luck,Steve.

My wife fell for that a couple of years back.
Raki is wonderful, but DONT mix it!!

I bought some of the honeyed stuff 3 year back,(you get to taste it for free in the shop)but found it didnt taste so good when you got home,so I still have most of it.

Having travelled the length of the island,I would suggest Rethymnon as a better alternative for you.It is vertualy in the center of the island on the north coast, and a very interesting town, especialy the old town.
Public transport is very good, and from Rethymnon area, you can easily get to most places, bear in mind that from Chania,Knossos is about 2and a half to 3 hours travel, but much less from Rethymo!
I see from your profile ,you are in Nottingham.
We are in Ilkeston,so if you would like any more help,or even like to meet up for a meal(Greek-naturaly!)please feel free to send me a personal message or e-mail us on [email protected]
As we have been visiting Crete for many years,Im sure we can help with any questions you may have.
When do you travel?I hope you will get to love this wonderful island and its people as much as the rest of us on here do! Steve Baker

Introduce Yourself
Your pronunciation ain t bad! What sort of things do you like to do on hol?
Whatever your interest, the members here are always ready to help,as in general we share a common love of the island and all it has to offer.
Are you happy to drive in Crete? If so you will see and discover so much more than you will ever learn from the reps.
Gouves is quite a nice place, not to far from the airport, pretty close to Hersonisos, which though rather commercialised is good for shopping,Malia on the other hand is pretty close ,but it IS full on club 18-30 land!
However, tell us your interest, and someone will be along to advise Im sure.Enjoy this beautiful island.Steve.B
