Help With Location On Southern Coast Of Crete

02 June 2006 - 04:53 AM

I lived on Crete in 1969 & 1970. A friend and I drove south of Heraklion to the southern coast of the island one day when we had nothing else to do. I remember the road being dirt and gravel for part of the trip. I asked the friend if he remembered where the place was. He remembers a story that may be the clue I need to identify the place. Here is his story:

"I remember a legend which spoke of Crete being attacked by Africans with lions. When the Africans left, one of the lions was late getting on the boats so he sat on the shore and looked out toward Africa. There is a mountain formation which resembles the head of a lion looking toward Africa."

Have any of you heard this story? If so, do you know where this mountain or hill is located? I want to try and find it when we are visiting Crete from 7-15 June.

Where To Stay In Central/south Crete?

22 April 2006 - 04:49 AM

My wife & I will be flying to Crete the first two weeks of June. I think I would like to stay somewhere south of Heraklion and take day trips to places in the southern part of the island. We will have a rental car.

We were on Crete last June (2005) and stayed near Hersonnisos, in Sissi, and Chania - two nights each. This trip, I think we could do more if we did not move from place to place and just took the day trips. We did not get south last year.

Does anyone have suggestions where to stay? One friend suggested the Villa Archanes. Other places on the map with possibilities might include Timbaki, Mires, Arkalohori, Agia Galini, etc. I would prefer finding something in the range of 50 to 80 or 90 Euros per night.

Thank you for your thoughts and advice.

Visiting Crete 8 June

28 May 2005 - 04:30 PM

My wife & I will be visiting Crete in 11 days. I just read Yannis comments about guidebooks, particularly the Rough Guide to Crete. He is exactly correct when he mentions what the guide says about Gouves and the closed American Air Force Base. I was on that base from March 1969 to August 1970. There were no planes or runways! We were all involved with communications.

We are going to spend 2 nights in Gouves, 2 nights in Chania, and 2 nights in Sissi and will have a rent car. Even though I spent 18 months there some 35 years ago, are there any specific "don't miss" recommendations? My wife has never been to Greece and I want to show her the places I visited long ago. I know the beautiful, quiet places we used to visit have developed into tourist areas, hotels, etc. I am not looking forward to seeing that! We used to eat at a quiet little cafe in Hersonnisos called Mike's Place. It probably had two tables inside the tiny place and 3 or 4 tables outside across the street on the harbor. It will not be the same I am sad to say.

The trip begins with Athens and will end with Santorini. I can't wait to return.

Where should I convert US Dollars to Euros?

15 May 2005 - 09:24 PM

My wife and I are flying from Texas to Greece/Crete on 4 June. Where is the best place for me to change to Euros? In Texas? At London Gatwick where we change planes? Athens? Thanks for the advice?

PS I still have some Drachs left over from my stay on Crete in 1969-70. Are they usable anywhere?
