#16622 Preveli Palm Forest Burned By Wildfires

Thank you for the link Yannis :)

Clearly lessons were not learnt from the 2008 fire which reached the top of the cliffs in the gorge, Photo shows the damage in Swallow Canyon (sept 2008)

BTW ...we arrive next tuesday, would you like some english tea ?
We could leave it with the hire car rep if that helps.

Hi and welcome, I'm suprised no ones answered you yet as its a popular area for tourist. Not stayed in that part of Crete myself so can't personaly help as we usually stay in the south or far east. Hopefully someone hereabouts will be able to help you soon :)

#16371 Dangers Of Cheap Car Hire

Posted by Graeme on 12 June 2010 - 09:20 AM

Discovered this article in the Crete Gazette, bit worrying actually as we've been offered cheap car hire ie 215 Euro for 14 days hire whereas other companis are around the 320 Euro mark or more for same car.
Does anyone know which company was involved with the illegal changing of no plates or are we not allowed to mention by name ?

#4519 Banned in Crete...?

Posted by Graeme on 13 June 2005 - 11:54 PM

Just been reading my Lonely Planet guide book on Crete and it says ..

Codeine which is commonly found in headache preparations, is banned in Crete, check labels carefully, or risk prosecution

Is this true, if so does anyone know why ?

Will have to change some items in our first aid kit if its true :?

What do Cretans use for pain relief or headaches then :?:

#3451 So many questions....

Posted by Graeme on 18 April 2005 - 04:21 PM

How nice to find a friendly and informative Crete forum :D

My wife and I + 10 year old daughter arrive in Crete 18th June very early am
We have booked our accomadation after surfing many internet sites and hope that our quest for somewhere quite and peacefull will be fullfilled during our stay at Akropolis Apartments Nr Rodakino, which will be our first visit to Crete :)

We shall hire a car which we pick up at airport on arrival but I'm not wishing to drive to our apartment in the dark on strange roads in strange car. So my first question is what time will dawn break 0n the 18th June, second .....how good is the road from Heraklion to Rodakino ?

Has anyone here stayed at Akropolis apartments ?

We plan to to visit Samari Gorge and whilst we are aware there are tour company's, we would prefer to take our car and leave it parked near to or at the gorge entrance. After arriving at Agia Roumeli we will travel by ferry to Sougia where we will stay in another apartment for 2 nights. From Sougia I will take taxi back to gorge entrance to get car

So.....next question, what is the road like from Rodakino going over the mountains via Imbros to Samari Gorge and is this the best route, or would it be better to go via Plakias /Rethymno ?
Also.....whats the road like going up to the Samari Gorge, its seems very wiggly

Water Parks
We were thinking of visiting the one at Varipetro, is this the most fun one, or is there one better ?

Next question, Its possible to take car on ferry from Chora Sfakion to Sougia but despite emails to the ferry company I can't find out how much it would cost

Any tips, advice, and help with any of above will be much appreciated.

Thank you and congrats on the excellant forum
