Arriving in Rethymnon mid April and looking for a reputable car hire firm from which to rent a car for the week. Anyone have any suggestions/recommendations? And of course, those to avoid but you can PM these details rather than face the wrath of the libel/slander law( can never remember which is which)!!!!
If you look like your passport picture....you probably need the holiday!

We recommend either of these companies to our own guests Traffic and Greenways

Prices seem OK, and all users satisfied so far. As well as having a physical presence in Rethymno (someone to shout at in person, just in case), they will also arrange airport collection, drop off.

Hi, Dave, glad you're returning to Crete in April. We've had a very wet winter this year so the island should still be nice and green with snow on the mountains. Can't help with car hire companies in Rethymnon, but we were talking to friends last night who have a holiday home here and they always use Athens Cars, who cover the island.

Also, if you're passing this way on your travels (we're just inland from Kalyves), I hope you'll pop in and see us - be good to meet up. You don't say when you're here, but the only pressing engagement we have in April is picking up a friend and her 4 cats from Iraklion on the 16th. She's decided to move out here for at least a year after coming out twice last year and loved it. We'll also be busy for the next couple of days getting her settled in.

Speaking for vehicle hire (we've arranged ours, but I can't remember the company we're using!), what price is unleaded petrol in Crete at the moment? I'm expecting it to be pretty horrific!

Hi, Tinks -as of today, it was just below 1.70 per litre, but the price does go up and down. The price here is also pretty much the most expensive in Greece, and there is some investigation being done on why this should be so, but we don't expect any immediate change.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Pam! It's around what I was expecting it to be. Shocking that it's nearly doubled in price over the last few years.

Here are the latest petrol prices in Crete:
http://www.explorecr...rol-prices.html

There are also pages with detailed information for petrol prices in every major city in Crete.

The average cost of unleaded petrol in Crete is 1.75€ in May 2011. You will find cheaper petrol near Heraklion (1.64 € in the area of Karteros near Heraklion Airport) and Chania (1.665€ near Stavros, Akrotiri).
In more remote areas the petrol prices are usually higher.
