I have a small business in Chania with 5 small holiday appartments.
Now there is a big problem with the water supply, as the agricultural water is totally turned off for more than a month now.
And the drinking water is also turned off certain times each day.
Someone told me that the water basins for agricultural water is empty, due to little rain/snow during the winter.
And the drinking water suffers from the same problem.
it is illegal to use drinking water for watering the garden, and fill the swimmingpools.
Anyone that has got some more information ?

Regards,
Frank

Hi and welcome to the forum :)

Sorry to hear about your difficultys, I'm based in uk so not aware of local problems in/around Chania.
I have asked on another forum and one their members or one of our local members might know more about the problem.
Here's hoping things improve for you and your business soon :)

Found this info......not sure it helps though :)

"Aug 11, 2010: Nightmare water scarcity to the countryside and the city

The imminent threat of destruction of this year's olive farmers face in an area of approximately 40,000 acres of crops are irrigated by TOEB Agia - Kolimpari and Aghia Marina - Platanias, and because of the drought many areas have not seen water for a month.
At the same time, the explosive situation in the city of Chania, where water reserves are exhausted. Last night, during a special press conference, the president of DEFACH Michael Dallas, sent a dramatic appeal to OADYK to strengthen the network of the city with additional 9000 cubic meters of water daily to enable the company to meet the increased needs of the period . According to M. Dallas, if not strengthen the network DEFACH, the company will be forced to cut the water for three hours every day till you drop in demand.

Crops
As for the precious irrigation water, olive oil producers see how special this year that the trees are laden with fruit and boosted all a good year, drought and water shortages will lead to a dramatic drop in production and thus their income. Of course not even mentioned vegetable production season, like tomatoes, peppers, etc..
As emphasized by President of Agia TOEB-Kolimpari Eleftherios Papadakis, "We have too many olives, if people do not irrigate will have other huge impact as we lost oil production. With regard to the TOEB vegetables from early July to a notice which set irrigation program addressing the residents of the area, said that "if you plant them as vegetables We TOEB We accept no responsibility for the disaster you, why not have water to give you . Vegetables if not watered every other day over. So there is no product, it will increase prices ... "
On his part, President of TOEB Agia Marina-Platanias John Fiotakis notes that "people have panicked and wants to water and is not. Those gardens have dried and it made an impact on the local economy as each farmer could be planted five tomato roots ... "
In most areas, mainly Kolimpari have to see irrigation water for a month, while a similar situation prevails in TOEB Agia Marina-Platanias and under k.Fiotaki "tank Platanias not get water to take to to give the high area of Agia Marina and the high area of Stalos where the irrigation networks. Especially in the area of Stalos water has to go a half months ... "
The problem of intense drought in these areas was discussed in late July at a meeting at the offices of the Prefect OADYK presence of Crete, but without any improvement. Please note that both TOEB irrigated by pipes of OADYK directly from the lake of Agia and there lies the problem, since according to the presidents of TOEB to draw water directly from the source by others. has drastically reduced the water falling in the lake. It said Mr Papadakis' fell in the lake water from various locations. That fell from a source that said Swim, fell from the source called reed bed, fell by some paravrysies. The TOEB Varypetro had a legitimate problem and eventually asked to take water from the source of Swim was closer to the pumping station, so that clean water and avoid creating problems for people who are watered by blocking the bekakia. But the way the water was vested. But should not the TOEB to get all that water. We should take a quantity to serve the remainder fall in the lake in order to create a tank because it can ruin the lake ... "
Please note that the annual water consumption by TOEB Agia-Kolimpari until last year was about 2.5 million cubic meters of which are 250-300 thousand cubic given to hotels. But the President stressed that if we cut the concrete irrigation water supplies to hotels, then they will increase the water consumption of water, creating a huge problem in the well water water deficit. However, both presidents of TOEB, apparently while being in distress, call the contact to find a way to ensure a steady albeit small water supply networks as well as stress themselves have exhausted all possible options.

Measures Agia Lake
And while farmers see the leaves on trees turning yellow and olives shrivel from lack of moisture, the Region of Crete Thanasis Karountzos a letter dated 08/05/2010 determine measures to conserve water in the lake of Agia reaching the point apply even to avoid pumping. Of course no one disagrees with the conservation of a quantity of water so the lake does not dry completely, but the farmers expect one - at least - a similar interest in k.Karountzo for their crops to devastate the water shortage.

The DEFACH
At the same time, appealed to Western Crete Development Organization to increase the cubic water supplied to enable the city of Chania be supplied with water without a problem, made last night during a special press conference, the responsible Deputy Mayor and Chairman of DEFACH, Michael Dallas .
As argued "since May I inform a number of documents in O.A.DY.K. the lack of water would face the town of Agia sources. I have recently been notified of the problem and the General Secretary of Crete, Athanasios Karountzo order to ensure that the Agency and to give nine thousand cubic than to sixty thousand cubic derived from boreholes. Unfortunately, the last two days, O.A.DY.K. instead increase the amount of us to go to seven thousand cubic which is the city needs to fill the cubic of Agia made us fall of two thousand cubic.
For this reason we had to water supply interruptions and to the region to be able to respond, not to become a water target stores located in the Venetian Harbour, and in the New Country. So for three hours left without drinking water, the following areas: Saint Matthew, the Meadows and the PACHIANA and Buttons.
Here, we must point out that after a telephone conversation which had been the mayor in performing debts Director-General of the Organization, Markos Patrelakis, we have the assurance that we will give the cubic water we requested. Otherwise, there will be a big problem, and each day the city of Chania consumes 25,000 cubic water. "

I don't think it is illegal, but it may cost you a lot because drinking water is more expensive that water for agricultural use

Yannis; I have experienced that yes, drinking water is many times more expensive than agricultural.
The drinking water kosts 1 € each cubic metre I think.
