The destructive insect, the Red Palm Weevil, is rampaging and infecting the palm trees it finds on its way in Crete. It is unknown how, the weevil has come to Kritsa and infected one more lovely palm tree next to St George Harakitis Church.
Services from the Nature Department of Agios Nikolaos Municipality cut the palm tree and buried it at the dedicated burial spot 2 meters below surface. The deputy mayor Giannis Lassithiotakis claims that the palm tree was infected 10-15 days ago and everyone is wondering which palms are now next...

What a shame; I had not heard of this nasty little bug before today - let's hope they have caught it before the infection spreads. Another wonderful palm in the main square was damaged a few winters ago by snow but it still provides a wonderful nesting and roosting place for many different birds.

I bet I will amaze a few friends in Kritsa when I can tell them what happened to their tree!
