Also want a cheap apartment for four of us. not too far from the air port!
want to be near the beach/sea/ and shops and posibly a social place for the odd evening.
Our children are 16yrs & 17yrs so are not babies.

Everyone has their own idea of the best places to be but Agios Nikolaos could have the variety that would suit your family - it is not extreme in any way:

An hour from the airport
Various beaches so you can choose to be right in the town, more secluded, sand, shingle or rocks
Good bus network to visit other towns and villages
Not full of loud teenagers intent on just getting drunk
A good mix of tavernas, bars, restaurants and night clubs
Boat trips for swimming, fishing or sightseeing
Apartments, posh hotels, villas, budget hotels and self catering.......

As for the time of year obviously early and late season are less expensive - if the family like to swim the sea is lovely and warm in September and October and Spring is great for sightseeing and walking

If you want any specific info please send me a PM otherwise there is a wealth of info on this great website.

What ever you choose have a great time.
