Any local Cretans (or anyone one else who might know) know anything about the meaning/origins of the surname Pitsakis... I believe its Cretan in origin (especially because of the -akis ending). I have heard it means something like knife maker? Not too sure about that though. Or, has anyone heard the name, is it common or uncommon?
Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

To me it sounds like this man was rather making pitsa (pizza) than knives...

haha, yeah I guess it sounds like it. Wonder how old the name is, really wish I could find out what it really means... maybe I will learn more while in Crete next week.

Just an idea, how about asking someone of that name what it means.

thanks for the idea Lala, maybe I'd ask myself... but I have done that, thats where I got the initial info about it meaning knife maker. I have spoken to my cousin and he confimed it means knife maker and that Pitsak is a name for a type of Cretan dagger. I will be coming to Crete tomorrow night (can't wait) and I have found out that Sfakia has many places with the name Pitsakis and have also found the village where my family is from in Chania prefecture. Thanks to everyone for their comments, but I suppose I needed to be in Greece to get the info.
