#12821 Good Resort For Historic Sights?

Posted by SteveB on 12 January 2008 - 02:19 PM in Explore Crete

Hi Bruce, and welcome to the best web-site about Crete.
Having travelled the length of the island,I would suggest Rethymnon as a better alternative for you.It is vertualy in the center of the island on the north coast, and a very interesting town, especialy the old town.
Public transport is very good, and from Rethymnon area, you can easily get to most places, bear in mind that from Chania,Knossos is about 2and a half to 3 hours travel, but much less from Rethymo!
I see from your profile ,you are in Nottingham.
We are in Ilkeston,so if you would like any more help,or even like to meet up for a meal(Greek-naturaly!)please feel free to send me a personal message or e-mail us on [email protected]
As we have been visiting Crete for many years,Im sure we can help with any questions you may have.
When do you travel?I hope you will get to love this wonderful island and its people as much as the rest of us on here do! Steve Baker

Hi Caroline,long time no chat1
Nice idea!
However,a lot to consider.
How technicaly informed are you about your subject? There is always a chance of a customer being much more than a keen amature!
However, judging from some of your pics, you are obviously pretty competant, but to make this work, you need to be able to find ways to take your clients photography to a higher level with results they can see for themselves.
Also, after looking at other ventures, like for instance painting courses, and Greek cookery courses, cost can be a prohibitive factor for many.
There is the cost of the air-fare,accomodation,transport ,before you even think about your own cost or making a profit!
However,Im sure you are aware of much of this, and should you get it going,I wish you every success.
Would I be right in thinking your main area of Crete is in the west?
Though we have travelled end to end,my main area is decidedly the East of the island,so if you need any help or advice about the east,Im more than happy to help where I can.
Anyway, hope this has been of some help,if only in semi-critical way!
Best of luck,Steve.

#11843 Who Wants To Destroy Greece?

This is terrible.Fires that happen naturally are bad enough, but to think this is a deliberate attack is shocking beyond belief! Our thoughts go out to the people of Greece.

#11637 Stalis

Posted by SteveB on 31 July 2007 - 07:39 PM in Explore Crete

Hi Kath, and welcome, thought Id replied to you couple of days back, but for some reason,it didnt show up.
Yes there are lots of places within easy reach by car,Ag.Nik,Elounda,Lasithi plateau, the Dicti cave,Irapetra, hersonisos(good for shops)
An interesting experience if you can make a Saturday morning,is the open air Bazzare and market in Heraklion, and of cours Knossos and the museums.
Kritsa is not too far away,if you go there recopmend go out other side of village, and drive up to top,Katharo Plateau(tavernas at top)
Also close by,are Sissi and Milatos.heading west past Heraklion,Bali and Rethymnon are less than 2 hours drive and worth a visit. The thing is,explore, and enjoy this wonderful island and its people.
Yiasoo,steve.B

#11630 Agios Nikolaos

Posted by SteveB on 30 July 2007 - 08:05 PM in Meet in Crete

Wim,my wife and I have stayed in Ag.Nik for many years, and have many friends there.Would it amaze you to hear we have Never been to Sorento bar,and have no desire to do so.Bit too party animal for our taste, but as it is the only bar of that sort in Agios,we dont mind,if thats what you like, fine.
however,I take your point,it does get rather a lot of comments here.

#11611 Any Sailors Amongst Us?

Posted by SteveB on 28 July 2007 - 01:34 PM in Explore Crete

Just a whimsical question at the moment, but do we have any members who have any experience of owning/sailing a boat in Crete?

#11597 Crete Virgins

Posted by SteveB on 26 July 2007 - 06:19 PM in Introduce Yourself

Hi Georgie, and welcome to the best Cretan website!
Your pronunciation ain t bad! What sort of things do you like to do on hol?
Whatever your interest, the members here are always ready to help,as in general we share a common love of the island and all it has to offer.
Are you happy to drive in Crete? If so you will see and discover so much more than you will ever learn from the reps.
Gouves is quite a nice place, not to far from the airport, pretty close to Hersonisos, which though rather commercialised is good for shopping,Malia on the other hand is pretty close ,but it IS full on club 18-30 land!
However, tell us your interest, and someone will be along to advise Im sure.Enjoy this beautiful island.Steve.B

#11595 Wim's Music Links

Posted by SteveB on 26 July 2007 - 01:36 PM in Cretan and Greek Music

Hi Wim,just read with interest your bit about the Arabic influence and Suzys link.
A close friend of mine who IS Cretan,Vasilis who runs "Posto" cafe/bar at Bali, spends many hours study on various aspects of Greek/Cretan history, and is very well read.
He revealed to me last year, after a great deal of research into old Cretan dialect,he had come to a conclusion he was afraid to tell the locals about.
He is convinced that much of the old dialect can be traced back to Arabic do to the fact that long ago,Crete was invaded by an Arabic war lord, who was so taken with the place,he destoyed his own ships, and ordered his army to take Cretan women as wives which gave rise to much of the Arab influences.
Interesting theory.True or not,Ive allways felt Crete has a feel of many cultures about it.
If you ever visit Bali, please look up Vasilis,a entertaining and very interesting guy!Steve.B

#11589 Hiring A Harley

Posted by SteveB on 25 July 2007 - 02:52 PM in Explore Crete

Hi Hondaboy,Sorry, dont know that place, but you will find hiring a bike of any size over 250,more expensive than hiring a car! Most common bigger bikes for hire are either 650 BMWs or Transalps.
Being a biker myself,I may be biased, but a Harley is the last thing I would want to hire!
Still,what ever floats your boat!

#11588 Top 100 Questions

Posted by SteveB on 25 July 2007 - 02:43 PM in Explore Crete

#11565 Top 100 Questions

Posted by SteveB on 23 July 2007 - 02:13 PM in Explore Crete

Hi Birgit,I think some frequently asked questions include:
Accomodations
best beaches
best naturist beaches
Car-hire,driving in Crete,
Boat trips
Places suitable for children

I think another useful one to add, would be places that are suitable for dissabled people.
after which we move into more specific areas of taste,i.e.,quite places, villages, live music, dancing, traditional activities etc.
Good idea, best of luck with it.Steve.B

#11481 Visits For 2007

Posted by SteveB on 06 July 2007 - 11:39 PM in Meet in Crete

Hi Tinks, long time no chat!Good tip for Elaphonisi,Get aroom for the night at the village of Kefali about 2 mile from the beach.Look for theRent-rooms place on the right with lots of bouganvillia, the owner is George Pelakas I think was the name.We had a brilliant night there, choice of rooms, good meal,GREAT wine and unbelievably inexpensive!
Have a great time.We will be out in late September too,Steve.B

#11447 Buying Raki In Britian

Posted by SteveB on 03 July 2007 - 11:22 PM in Living in Crete

Soory Francis, but you will be very lucky if you can find Raki in the U.K!
A Cypriot friend tells me there may be a place in London, but he has no idea where.
Only answer is GO BACK TO CRETE-you KNOW you want too!

#11446 Boat Trips In Crete?

Posted by SteveB on 03 July 2007 - 11:09 PM in Explore Crete

Sarah, boat trips depends on where you are staying? In the east there are trips to Chrissi island from Irapetra,to Spinalonga from Elounda and Ag.Nik,or in the west to Gramavousa from Kissamos,or for a day trip ,there are boats to Santorini, but thats far cheaper to book from Heraklion rather than the Holiday reps trips!
I think you will be lucky to hire a boat for yourselves in Crete though, but PLEASE,hire a car and explore, its the only way to get the best of Crete!

#11401 I've Got One Hell Of A Raki Hangover This Morning...

Posted by SteveB on 01 July 2007 - 06:18 PM in Explore Crete

Lil, the problem is,you had wine first!
My wife fell for that a couple of years back.
Raki is wonderful, but DONT mix it!!

:D Lil,the honeyed raki is easilly available in Rethymno. There is a shop that sells only raki and cretan products.
I bought some of the honeyed stuff 3 year back,(you get to taste it for free in the shop)but found it didnt taste so good when you got home,so I still have most of it.
