Oh, Why Does The Weather Have To Be So Nice?

Posted by Dinny, 21 January 2006 - - - - - - · 1,501 views

These days are just so beautiful! Every morning I am greated by a blue sky and warm sunshine (ok, ok, it DID rain the other night and there were some clouds the day after, but nevertheless...) and I would like so much to get out to enjoy it. But I don't have time, since I had to accept a big translation project to even out the cutbacks in my budge...

Healthy Cats Means A Healthy Village!

Posted by Dinny, 19 January 2006 - - - - - - · 1,040 views

I would like to linger a bit more on the cat situation here in Pitsidia. Thoughts drift back to wherever I have been on vacation during a lifetime and to the cats of all places. Starving cats give the impression of a starving population, whenever you don't have enough to share with the creatures that keep your house from being infested with rats, you...

Happy Days Are Here Again!

Posted by Dinny, 14 January 2006 - - - - - - · 831 views

Remember that song? It puts you in a good mood, so even though there is no particular reason for choosing just that title for this post, I think it's a good starting point!

Well, the weather is fantastic these days! Every morning starts with bright sunshine, and it looks like spring everywhere. All these small yellow flowers keep your spiri...

Inhumane Humans

Posted by Dinny, 09 January 2006 - - - - - - · 1,324 views

During the years I have heard many sweet stories about how kind the Cretans are, practically the warm, generous type of people which lived on Earth centuries ago, with values that we westeners have lost long ago. Unfortunately I must tell you that these stories seem to be fairy tales....

As you might have read, I feed a bunch of cats on my terrace. Stray...

Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On!

Posted by Dinny, 08 January 2006 - - - - - - · 887 views

I have been working since six this morning and around half-past-one I started to feel hungry, but I didn't really have the time to prepare lunch. So I decided to have just a glas of juice and to make lunch later.

While pouring the orange juice in the glas I had the distinct sensation that my vision was playing tricks on me, a strange feeling of move...

Epiphany In Matala

Posted by Dinny, 07 January 2006 - - - - - - · 1,052 views

OK, I've got the picture now! Here, we don't care much about Christmas, we won't bother to make any special arrangements for New Year's Eve - but on the 6th of January the machinery starts running on FULL! In Matala, bars that have been closed for two months reopen just for the weekend (whereafter they'll go back to sleep for a...

A Walk To The Beach

Posted by Dinny, 05 January 2006 - - - - - - · 914 views

Happy New Year!

Southern Crete entered 2006 peacefully and quietly. I went for a walk to the square in Pitsidia just after midnight on New Year's Eve and absolutely NOTHING was happening. Shortly afterwards I heard 2 firecrackers go off and saw the distant light from one single rocket, a short outburst of a shotgun - and that was it! :-)

Do They Know It's Christmas After All?

Posted by Dinny, 14 December 2005 - - - - - - · 964 views

10 days to Christmas. I find it extremely hard to get in the "right" spirit 'cause it's doesn't LOOK like Christmas and it doesn't FEEL like Christmas.

Let's not blaim the weather, whoever has got a piece of land down here is crying for rain and we don't get enough. A quick shower, but nothing really to do some good for t...

No-events On A Sunny Winter Day

Posted by Dinny, 27 November 2005 - - - - - - · 993 views

I woke up early this morning, at seven. After a whole week (!!) of grey weather and rain it was delicious to see the blue sky again. The reason for such an early wakeup was Zoi, my daughters dog. I have been dog-sitting while the family had left for a weekend in Chania, and whoever has a dog knows that they want to go out EARLY.

Zoi is used to s...

What You Should Know About Isdn In Crete

Posted by Dinny, 22 November 2005 - - - - - - · 806 views

I once had an ISDN connection in Denmark. Meaning that I actually had TWO telephone lines, either I could use one for the internet and one for the phone line, or we could use two phones to call different numbers at the same time... using any phone connected to a plug anywhere in my appartment.

When I ordered and ISDN connection here it actually took onl...

Time To Face Authorities

Posted by Dinny, 15 November 2005 - - - - - - · 893 views

I don't know where time went, it seems as if I came here yesterday but it has been almost three months. Maybe you don't notice time passing so much when the weather is always almost the same?

Anyway, it's time for me to face the authorities, claim my right to be registered here as a permanent immigrant with whatever duties and rights might b...

It'll Be Some Time Before I'll Fit In!

Posted by Dinny, 09 November 2005 - - - - - - · 1,022 views

Living in Crete is wonderful. I love my house, I love the relaxed way of living, I love the weather and especially the surroundings, at least whenever I have the time to go out and enjoy them.

I've read everything I could put my hands on about living in Crete, about the way of living and how to fit in. But I realize that when your mind and mentality...

Why Greeks Have A Problem With The Water Closet

Posted by Dinny, 04 November 2005 - - - - - - · 958 views

The first type of water closet was invented around 1550 by a grandson to Queen Elizabeth I. Ever since it has been improved until mid 18th century when it came to look a bit like we know it today.

I have been in remote places on the Planet Earth, but never in any (other than Greece) where they did not use water closets in the way they are normally used:...

End Of Tourist Season

Posted by Dinny, 01 November 2005 - - - - - - · 1,112 views

Yesterday was for most people the last day of the tourist season. The weather was as usual - blue sky and clear sunshine - and the people in Pitsidia were busy cleaning and preparing to close down, most with a happy smile and looking forward to a bit of relax - at least till it's time to go and pick olives!

This morning I woke up and found it ha...

Christening Party

Posted by Dinny, 23 October 2005 - - - - - - · 1,055 views

The weather this morning showed all the good signs for a perfect party: sunshine, blue sky, no wind.

At noon we all met in front of the little church in Matala... no, it's not little, it TINY, it has something like 10 seats inside, but that was no problem, the people just stand outside the church while the ceremony goes on. A what a ceremony! So...

A Weekend Ahead With A Lot A Movement...

Posted by Dinny, 21 October 2005 - - - - - - · 862 views

Heavy weekend ahead... a little change from my everyday-very-quiet-life here in Pitsidia.

Sunday is the big event: the baptism of my two grandchildren, Aria and Fani. Aria is almost four and Fani is about 9 months old, so it's in good time they go through this ceremony. I am looking very much forward to my first "Greek Party", I'm told i...

A Visit To Lentas

Posted by Dinny, 19 October 2005 - - - - - - · 874 views

This morning again there were no jobs to get started on, which means I'm free to do whatever I want. And since the sky is dressed in its "intense blue" I think this is the right day to go for a visit to Lentas. I was inspired by Yannis' description of the road to Lentas (See Homepage, "Disko or Disiko") and also by the description...

Just An Ordinary Saturday...

Posted by Dinny, 15 October 2005 - - - - - - · 924 views

This morning there was no work to be done on the PC... there shouldn't be, it's Saturday! But you never know what the translation agencies come up with.... Anyhow, today they didn't think of anything in particular, small stuff that could wait till Monday morning for delivery.

So Saturday is all mine!

The weather is wonderful, warm...

Getting A Tax Number

Posted by Dinny, 05 October 2005 - - - - - - · 921 views

The description in Caroline's book "The Cool Guide to Living in Crete" of a worst(?)-case-scenario while trying to obtain a tax number had made me go through nightmares. While some people speaks a little English in Crete, it is also true that a LOT of people just throws the head back to make you understand that they don't, maybe especially...

Take Care Of Where You Drop Your Cigarettes!

Posted by Dinny, 04 October 2005 - - - - - - · 877 views

Yesterday I went up to Sivas - to take pictures of the canons - and further up to Listaros to see the damages. I had heard that they have had a fire breaking loose among the olive trees a while ago, and since Listaros is such a beautiful place with a breathtaking view I wanted to see for myself.

The ground among the trees was black and the leaves on all...
