It seems a long while since going to Crete for our holiday so I thought it was about time I made an effort to put fingers to keyboard.
We arrived in Heraklion around 22.40, no hitches, picked our hired car up brand new, very comfortable, we then headed off to Anissaras, thought we were going to have problems finding the hotel, but do you know what! we found it first go, could'nt believe it. Lovely traditional Greek hotel, (Hotel Aloi) spent 2 nights there. Then on to Elounda to meet friends for 2 days, pleasant but not somewhere we would stay for a holiday, very expensive compared to south of Crete. We then took our time & drove South to Matala, a wonderful drive passing through Irepetra, then headed on over the Plain, stopped for lunch near Damata, & boy what a feast!! best meal we had all holiday. Finally arrived in Matala, rented an apartment for 4 nights, we then got intouch with Dinny & had a beer or 2 on the balcony of her house, beautiful place nice & peaceful, loved the dog & pussy cat & kittens. Following day we went for a June Crete dinner, to the fish restaurant overlooking the beach. We really enjoyed Matala, nice feel about the place, but not to stay in the height of the season it would be far to busy. We said our goodbye's & visited beaches on the way to Frangokastello, lovely beach, Fab apartment (Maria's studio's) but not a lot of atmosphere, the restaurants closed early, so very little to do, but the place is ideal for children because the beach is so safe, & plenty of sand. We left after 5 days & headed off to Chora Safkia to catch the ferry to Paleochora, but it was not running, so we drove back up to Chania, back down through the White Mountains stopping on the way for lunch, beautiful drive, glad we decided to drive. We stopped for coffee's on the way to Paleochora & admired the views, not much has changed since the last time we visited baring the new road. Arrived in Paleochora late afternoon found a room next to the pebble beach, chilled out for 5 days, great atmosphere of an evening, they close the square & main street off to traffic, & everything comes alive,a great meeting place, good bars etc, not at all rowdy, we love the place. We drove up to the Millia Traditional Settlement, stunning, words cannot describe, we had a super lunch & a wander round, but we decided not to go back to stay overnight because of the mossies! Pete has a really bad reaction to them never-the-less it is without doubt a haven. Time up, so off we go again passing Eleffonisi & many other beaches on the way & stopped at Kastelli, then on to our last destination Aghia Pelagia, Wow! it was heaving could'nt get near the place to park up (it was a Sunday, forgot it was Greek family day at the beach) they all started to depart from early evening, we found a very nice Greek apartment hotel with B&B. Stayed for 3 days, but a bit to busy for us. Holiday over, spent day at Amnissos not very nice, headed back to airport & guess what HOME!. The 3 weeks was brilliant, everyone so friendly, not a cloud in the sky, overall GREAT. Will be back at some point.
